DARV_Steps Untold is a series of Mixed Reality performative interventions on steps and stairways in the public space of Linz. The project addresses the social pressure for optimisation and constant (self-) improvement, the continuous (re-) positioning and integration in new contexts.&#38;nbsp;

The DARV core team creates a conceptual and media framework in which choreographers and sound artists work together with non-professional performers from different cultural and social backgrounds. They present two site-specific performative interventions accompanied by soundscapes, involving real and digital performers.
All the elements interact through an Augmented Reality application.&#38;nbsp;
In the two projects, Treasures and (Not) Here (Not) There, different levels of reality are intertwined with the use of AR technology, exposing also personal, intimate realities of the participants. These performances reveal their way of living and working, their perspectives on language and culture, the awareness of their own diversity.

Dolma Jover, ES &#124; choreographer&#38;nbsp;
Edgar Friedl, AT &#124; sound artist

Luis Gonzaga Hoyos, CO &#124; performer
Arno Plass, AT &#124; performer
A manifesto, a series of bodily transformations and Queer Tango are just a few of the treasures which one can find on a well-known public stairway in Linz, where this site-specific performance takes place. The live performing characters get intertwined with their digital doubles in the space of augmented reality, telling deeply personal stories to the viewer. Different forms of communication are explored in Treasures by blurring or even ignoring social and gender roles. The aim is to encourage people to share their treasures, as well as to take a step further towards a less hierarchical and harmful society, to appreciate the Otherness and the treasures it holds.

 (Not) Here (Not) There
Constantin Georgescu, RO &#124; choreographer
Sabina Hyoju Ahn, KR &#124; sound artist

Maia Benashvili, GE &#124; performer
Ayan Rezaei, IR &#124; performerThis project revolves around the concept of visibility and invisibility, in a bid to create a mixed&#38;nbsp; environment which uses digital elements and live presence to reflect on social and existential&#38;nbsp; topics. While on its surface it proposes a playful digital alteration of perception which filters the&#38;nbsp; space and the inter-corporeal organisation of the two performers, this project attempts to draw&#38;nbsp; the attention to social circumstances which are “blind” to integration efforts of marginalised&#38;nbsp; categories, being that due to migrant backgrounds or gender inequality. It is therefore an invitation&#38;nbsp; to (re)consider the structures of perception according to which we construct socially relevant&#38;nbsp; scales and contexts.
Stairs, as an architectural solution to access and connectivity, but also in their metaphoric&#38;nbsp; understanding as the means to rate or compare, are being used here as a place of engaging with&#38;nbsp; challenges, goals, and transformations.
The performing space of the Ars Electronica Stairs, becomes a choreographic platform where&#38;nbsp; spatial dynamics between the performers and their degrees of visibility are being explored with&#38;nbsp; the help of AR (augmented reality).

The DARV project edition entitled Wandering Islands is conceived as a media art exhibition. All the elements involved - performative interventions, site-specific installations, intermedia dance performances and large scale interactive video projections, are connected with the use of an Augmented Reality (AR) application to create a Mixed reality experience.

The artistic concept revolves around the interaction between separated fragments of a larger whole and their transformational journey between different realms.

As the island is a piece of land separated from the mainland, different bodies or body parts are represented as disconnected islands. In their desire to connect with each other, they experience the creation of a whole new body (creature?), discover new ways of interrelating and get transformed.&#38;nbsp;

Mind and body (dis-)connections, inner and outer spaces, real and augmented bodies, constructed and virtual identities, all navigate various levels of subjective reality, playing with the concept of cognition and the different proportions of the elements involved.

The viewers through their physical presence, become a constructive element of the media art exhibition. Using the AR app they have the opportunity to observe several site-specific studies in which digital performers and real ones interact with real and virtual objects.&#38;nbsp;

DARV_ Abandoned Land is an intermedia dance performance, which sprouts connections between analog and digital. The performers interact with large-scale objects and video projections, resembling the endless migration from one world to another in search for the better. The DARV team and eight dancers perform in various locations in Austria, South Korea and Bulgaria, guiding the audience through dystopian realities and abandoned sites. Drained-off utopias, failed social mechanisms and ideologies are embodied, explored and ultimately abandoned.
Conditioned by enforced changes along the work process, the project has naturally become a response to the present world situation, its limitations and possibilities.

DARV is a series of projects conceived by an international team of artists and interaction designers based in Austria. Contemporary Dance, Site-specific Installation and Video Art are connected via technology into Mixed Reality experiences, interlacing real and virtual realms.

An intermedia dance
performance &#38;amp; AR exhibition experience

Clairvoyance into the Future has been fascinating and even crucial throughout the history of humankind. What we need nowadays is to become “clairvoyants” into the Present:
to expand our abilities beyond reach, to sharpen our
attention, to purify our perception and grasp the
multidimensional reality we live in.
We go back to the land which others abandoned drowned
in ashes, as visionaries of the Present: the only time and
dimension in which we still have the chances to explore,
create and make a difference.

		<description>DARV Art&#38;amp;Tech Workshop&#38;nbsp;

Interface Cultures Department, Kunstuniversität Linz
shooting
9th of December 2021. Duration 3 hours. 14th of January 2022, Presentation of students' projects.
Gallery
The key intention of this workshop is the creation of artistic concepts and narratives for AR/ MR experiences and performative interventions in public spaces. At the same time, we would explore together the potential for social engagement and public participation in these kind of projects. A starting point for reflection would be DARV projects examples involving socially inspired concepts related to migrant and queer topics. We would discuss about possible public spaces in Linz for conceiving site-specific AR/ MR experiences and performative interventions. We suggest as conceptually interesting those public spaces serving for transition from one point to another (e.g. bridges, stairways, elevators, etc).

The students will be given the opportunity to use the DARV Augmented Reality application in order to realise their projects.

The workshop would focus on connecting the real and virtual world utilising Augmented Reality to merge different artistic expressions in an experience of intermedia oneness.

Workshop schedule (on demand):

9th of December 2021, 10:15 - 13:15 h

		<description>DARV_Theme Meetings

Innovations-Hauptplatz Linz
24th of February 2022&#38;nbsp;21st of April 2022
Gallery
DARV Theme Meetings bring together professionals from Art, Culture, and Technology fields who share and discuss different aspects related to the presence and perception of Digital Art in public space. &#38;nbsp;

In partnership with Innovationshauptplatz Linz, the DARV team aims to create a new hybrid space for sharing, questioning and experimentation, to foster processes of creation and production of Digital Art for urban environments.

The role of Digital Art in public context and its potential for evolving into a critical, social and environmental tool is explored from various perspectives during this meeting series.

Artists, curators, media theorists, UX designers and software developers share thoughts and know-how on related topics such as Performative interventions in public space and public participation, AR in public space, The social aspect of performance and the connection to public spaces, On the physical presence of digital art.

This event series is co-funded by Linz Kultur.

DARV Theme Meeting 1.0 will focus on Augmented Reality as a tool for artistic expression, its potential for transformation of the urban space and interaction with the public.&#38;nbsp;

The DARV_Steps Untold project - performative interventions on stairways in the public space of Linz, will be briefly presented by Violeta Ivanova and Mihaela Kavdanska (artists, DARV core team). The project addresses the social pressure for optimisation and constant (self-) improvement, the continuous (re-) positioning and integration in new contexts. The DARV core team created a conceptual and media framework in which real and digital performers interact through an AR application, connecting different realities.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

DARV’s experience of using Augmented Reality for artistic purposes in public space will be introduced in the context of an open discussion with Jakob Dietrich (Memphis, qujOchÖ, LINZ FMR).

Florian Weinrich, software developer (DARV core team) will introduce the DARV Augmented Reality Platform for rapid prototyping. Try outs of this open source browser based platform designed especially for artistic and educational purposes, will be possible.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Participants:&#38;nbsp;

Violeta Ivanova (conceptual artist, DARV core team)

Mihaela Kavdanska (media artist, DARV core team)

Florian Weinrich (software developer, DARV core team)

Jakob Dietrich (Memphis, qujOchÖ, LINZ FMR)

DARV Theme Meeting 2.0 focuses on the current state of AR (Augmented Reality), open source AR, the presence of AR in platforms like Metaverse, and especially on the interaction with "analog" artistic practices.

The topic that Florian Weinrich (software developer and interaction designer, DARV core team) will reflect on during his presentation is "How open source XR can be democratized and used for artistic projects?"

"Most of the “valley companies” are working on vendor-locked XR. This development is great but has to be accessible by the broad public without having tracking, ads, or censorship implemented at its core. After presenting a framework (or nomenclature) for defining AR and VR, Florian Weinrich will talk about how DARV Online (AR App) fits in this metaverse and what future developments could look like." (F. Weinrich)

A short Q&#38;amp;A session will follow.

During the second part of this Theme Meeting, the DARV team will offer guidance through a hands-on experience. The participants in this workshop would try out different technical possibilities of using AR in order to share artistic vantage points in the public space of Linz.

We invite professionals and students from the Art &#38;amp; Culture scene to bring objects relevant to their work, statements, ideas, or personal life. The objects would be 3D scanned, photographed or video recorded, and introduced in Augmented Reality via DARV Online (AR app) at a location of their choice. This content authoring process will happen purely on phones or tablets and results in AR will be available immediately.

DARV Online is a collaborative augmented reality platform that combines software tools and concepts for AR experiences. Users can upload objects that are bound to a position in the real world (GPS, location-based AR) in a web interface. If users are in close proximity of those objects, they are placed in the space relative to them.

Furthermore, objects can be bound to image-based markers (marker-based AR). These objects are visible in AR as soon as users see the selected reference image. Objects include media files (photo, video, live streams) or 3D scans of rooms or physical objects. All parameters regarding the position and appearance of the objects in the virtual space can also be controlled in&#38;nbsp;the web interface of DARV Online. DARV Online provides a documented web api, thus all of these values and&#38;nbsp;objects can be uploaded and modified automatically. DARV Online offers an Android and iOS AR app for visualizing this data.&#38;nbsp;In this app, it is possible to switch between "collections" of objects - all of these objects are then placed in space depending on the AR method&#38;nbsp;(location or marker-based). Objects can also be uploaded through the&#38;nbsp;mobile app. Once uploaded, they are placed in the users location and&#38;nbsp;become immediately visible to everyone else. Image-based markers are&#38;nbsp;also supported in this step and can be created by users in the app.

The DARV collective was invited by Doar Maine Association form Arad to coordonate&#38;nbsp;a five-day educational experience where art installations and performances created through analog and digital means, were implemented in Augmented Reality and presented in an exhibition in public space at Biblioteca Județeană Alexandru D. Xenopol Arad.

The workshop leaders collaborated with a group of 12 students from the High School for Fine Art "Sabin Drăgoi" and from the Faculty of Design, UAV Arad, with guidance and organization provided by their professors.&#38;nbsp;The main focus was on climate change in Arad and the surrounding area, as well as pressing issues related to the impact of digital media and devices on the students' lives.

The site-specific AR exhibition opened on May 26th in the courtyard of Biblioteca Județeană Alexandru D. Xenopol Arad. Workshop participants and projects:

It’s Yours. &#124; Palko Cristina, Clanda Sergiu-Raul

Fever &#124; Szauka Ioana, Vasiliu Alexandru

The way of nature &#124; Sarkozi Winona-Maya

The worm of the new era &#124; Grodei Marisa-Diana

Tired of being tired &#124; Dura Bianca

In/visible strings &#124; Stanciu Alexandra-Ștefania

Song of the leaves &#124; Olaru Ema

Is somebody else here? &#124; Farîma Ana

Bee-ing aroud &#124; Knapik Bogdana

The work process began in February 2023 with four online meetings in February, April, and May. These meetings focused on concept creation, production guidelines, and implementation strategies. The students submitted proposals, which were reviewed by their professors and the workshop leaders, who then provided multiple feedback sessions.&#38;nbsp;On May 22nd, everyone involved gathered in Arad for the onsite workshop. The workshop leaders guided the students through the production process of analog and digital content creation, 3D scanning of the objects created, filming of the performances, and the actual implementation in AR (Augmented Reality).&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;The workshop ran from 10:00 to 18:00 every day.&#38;nbsp;One of the days was dedicated to visiting the National Park Lunca Mureșului, where ecological problems were discussed, and locations for implementing the AR projects in the area were chosen.

The workshop leaders and the professors involved were delighted to observe the interest from the audience and the students' engagement. Nita Mocanu, one of the professors and the lead organizer of the workshop through the "Doar Maine" assosiation (as part of the Post-Education Program), expressed their satisfaction:

"We are very glad to have had this collaboration with the Faculty of Design, Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad, and the highly supportive team at Arad County Library. The students showed remarkable receptiveness, including those from Sabin Drăgoi Art College Arad. The participants made significant strides in contemporary art, with some even exploring New Media art. We hope to collaborate with them again in the future."

The DARV Collective is currently working on additional&#38;nbsp; development of the DARV AR application for presenting the projects in different public spaces in Arad and the area.

This workshop and exhibition were part of the&#38;nbsp;Post-Education project. Pedagogues of Crisis, developed by the Association Doar Mâine, Minitremu, the Association Foc și Pară, and Kinema Ikon, within the Cultural Program "Timișoara 2023 - European Capital of Culture,". It is funded by the Municipality of Timișoara through Centrul de Proiecte, co-financed by the Arad Museum Complex and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Bucharest.
